Many mobile carriers and even your current long distance carrier charge obscene amounts of money for international calls. VOIP is changing all that. Many services such as Vonage offer low cost calling plans with international rates far below what your current long distance carrier charge.

Other services such as Skype and Jajah are also offering low cost international phone calls that can even connect you through your own mobile phone at no additional cost other than minutes off your calling plan. Better yet some companies such as Skype offer low cost international calls through your data plan (usually requiring a “smart phone”). The most popular smart phones today are Blackberrys, Iphones with the new Android OS making up for lost ground. These phones offer applications such as Skype that can make international calls without utilizing minutes off your calling plan.

New services are constantly challenging these large companies. I recently came across CallArc. CallArc is looking to change the game. They want to bring people FREE international calls, allowing people to make calls through their mobile phone as well as through smart phone apps. This definitely looks like a game changer. Currently they’re accepting signups for their beta testing. Let’s hope they have a successful launch, bringing free international calls to the world. They can be found here.

So are international calling cards a thing of the past? I definitely think so, there are far better alternatives out there. There is truly no need to deal with purchasing pre-paid calling cards to make international calls. Aside from the hassle of going to the store and picking up a calling card, there’s no need to deal with a 1800 number, long codes and PIN numbers and remembering the international number you want to call every time. Most of these VOIP services provide contact lists. Once an account is created you only need a local access number which recognizes your mobile phone and allows you to access your contact list for simple one step dialing. There truly is nothing easier out there. Now these companies just need to get the word out. There are many people out there not aware of VOIP services and how easy and cost effective they can be.
