‘Self confidence’ is belief in one’s own abilities. So, how much do you trust your abilities? The more trust you have in your own abilities the more self confident you are. Being more self-confident heightens the chances of being more successful in life too, because the more you believe in yourself, the more others will too. Alas, we are not all blessed with bucketfuls of self confidence, and even those who are more confident than others can still feel insecure at times.
Many things can cause an individual to lack confidence. It can happen when we are faced with new and particularly unexpected challenges. It can stem from childhood, being bullied at any age can seriously affect one’s confidence, so too can a series of knockbacks. But by believing in yourself, you can overcome obstacles and challenges. By accepting and admitting to mistakes made and learning from them, you can make yourself more self confident and stronger.
Gaining self confidence is a process of recognising and trusting your capabilities, and of course applying them. Consider this to be like the best personalised gifts you’ve ever received. Confidence is all about knowing yourself inside out, and that includes your weaknesses! It’s no good knowing you’re good or bad at something and then never putting it into practice, or working on them, is it?
Preparation and practice can help your confidence immensely. Say for example if you had a job interview coming up. You could just wait worrying yourself to death for the interview to come around or you could spend your time wisely by preparing for it.
Look at the top sports stars as an example. They all, rightfully, have very great belief in their talents, but they also acknowledge weaknesses too. They still practice to improve their strengths but they work on those weaknesses as well.
There are plenty of methods you can use to boost confidence. One good technique is to make notes of when you feel confident and when you don’t. Include things like what you were doing and who you were with. This way you can figure out exactly what it is that makes you feel insecure. This in turn leads to self-awareness.
One of the biggest boosts is to challenge yourself, so sign up and do something you wouldn’t normally do. Take an evening class, learn to dance, take yourself out of your comfort zone, because the more you do, the less the fear will become when you face other challenges!
However, stop comparing yourself with other people. Everyone is different and wonderfully unique. Try to do at least one thing per day that brings a smile to your face. Of course, positive thinking is a big help – tell yourself that you’re great. Deep down, you know what strengths you have so keep them in mind at all times. Even if you need to shout them from the rooftops.
Using inspirational quotes is certain to be of benefit. For example, ‘Confidence comes not from always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong’. And always, always, always trust your gut instincts. So don’t forget, by believing in yourself others will too.
