When I wander around from country to country, working with and talking to my various personal development clients, I am struck by how many people who are doing what they’re doing for the money. When I ask them what would they do with their life if money were no object, a small minority tell me that they would keep doing what they’re currently doing. The evidence from fourteen years’ work appears to be vindicated by the statistics on how the vast majority of ordinary people don’t like their work. Various European surveys that figure to about two-thirds whereas a recent US survey suggested that as much as 80% of people dislike doing what they’re doing “for a living”.

If money were no object, might you change your life? And what might it take for money to be no object? These are big questions that undoubtedly exercise a lot of people’s minds – an survey for Ireland’s Irish Times in 2009 came to the conclusion that “financial freedom” ranked foremost in terms of young to middle-aged male workers’ goals. However, it appears to me that many people never have enough money – and those that have lots always desire more – and, if you’re permanently struggling for more then, it appears to me, that you’re existing in a permanent state of dissatisfaction – pretty close to what all the various different surveys, coming at this topic from a variety of different angles, conclude.

The consequnce of this craving for financial security or freedom – neither of which are actually attainable because both are merely a state of mind to those that already earn a reasonable income – people are, quite literally, not living but going through the motions. The feedback that I have collated for over fourteen years suggests that people would only start living life to the full if money were no object. What is even more sobering is that, in asking the question of my clients in a different manner – ‘how would you spend the next three months if you only had three months to live?’ – it appears that people will only seriously consider putting their quality of life first when they think that time is running out.

However, time is running out – this minute will never be repeated. The opportunity to be happy – another state of mind – today will never present itself again. I believe that undue emphasis is placed on one’s finances by the self-help and personal development industry – just look at the websites that suggest that you can get rich quick or ’explode’ your income effortlessly. The reality of it is – and, again, I have the evidence from both my own work and research to prove it – that, with the right state of mind, money is merely a hygiene factor that will effortlessly look after itself if you’re prepared to wholeheartedly do what you’re supposed to be doing now – with no ulterior motive in mind, no dissatisfaction clinging to you, no thinking or worrying over so-called financial freedom. If you’re prepared to live more and think about money less, you won’t just live more, but you’ll have all the money required to do it.

I’ve spent a fair bit of time chatting on the telephone with clients over the last couple of weeks and it’s got me to wondering why people are so uncertain, anxious, worried and even fearful at present. And why is money at the centre of so many people’s thoughts, why are so many people focused on money, making more of it, holding on to what they have or thought they had, fearful of not having enough? Indeed, I believe that I would be correct when I say that our present afflictions in what we like to think of as the “developed world” are the result of an all-pervasive obsession with money. And, sad to say, this is a greed fuelled, in part, by people operating in the area in which I’ve been working since 1996 – the self-improvement or personal development “industry”.

I find it very odd that many self-improvement “gurus” or “better yourself experts” are often almost exclusively focused on money – and making more of it. In other words, DVDs and books like “The Secret”, websites that shout “Treble Your Income” or sell fake $1m bills pander to the self-destructive obsession of the majority of people in this developed world of ours. Yeah, most people are obsessed with having “enough” money – whatever “enough” actually means! Does it, for example, mean something similar to Rockefeller’s concept that “enough” meant “just one more!” – or does it mean something else entirely?

Anyway, back to my point. I’ve done a little research and discovered that even “self-help classics” like Florence Schovel-Shinn’s 1926 “The Game of Life and How to Play It” – which I recommend to all my clients – places undue emphasis on money. Money raises its ugly head all over the place in that and, sad to say, most “self-help” books. Even my own book “To Succeed…Just Let Go” wanders into the area of how to get more money. Or maybe I’m being a little too hard on myself because, in essence, it explains how ample money flows if you flow first.

However, a few weeks back, after a heart-warming lunch in the breath-taking surroundings of the French Alpine lakeside town of Annecy, as we wandered along the snow-covered streets, I took one step back and looked at my wife and three children (big children at this stage!) strolling, arm-in-arm ahead of me. That’s what happiness is – that’s what success is all about. Just in that moment.

We’re not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. We’re not obsessed with money – otherwise, I might work a little more often than I do! But we’ve never run out of the stuff and we have plenty for now. And that’s all anyone needs.
So let’s stop obsessing about money, financial freedom, passive income, greed – all turns of phrase used by my clients over the last couple of weeks – and let’s get on with looking at what we have, embracing what we have, enjoying the wonderful moments that life offers us most of the time, if we’d only open our eyes, minds and hearts to them. Because, in actual fact, that’s what life is all about.

What does the word “abundance” mean to you? Do you associate hard back breaking work to it, or do you think it takes someone to work 9-5 for wealth?

If those are the images that run through your mind when “wealth creation” is mentioned; then you really need to read this article. When we were young we were taught by our parents (most of us) that the way to earn an honest living was to go to work everyday and work hard.

Well that may have been so for our parents, but with the changing times things are now different. Working everyday for someone else is just a ticket to an “early grave.”

wealth: An abundance of assets or goods.

creation: The act of creating.

wealth creation: The act of creating an abundance of assets or goods.

We live in the land of opportunity and yet so few americans put their thoughts into wealth creation. Financial freedom is just a dream for most people. They would love to retire by the age of 65 unfortunately most americans will not realize this dream. If only they know they could have what they desire if they put their mind on what they desire instead of what they do not. Read the rest of this entry…
