Overcoming Shyness And Building Self Confidence. Help Your Child And Yourself

As you know, shyness is an immense blockade to building self-confidence. I clearly remember being painfully shy, as a youngster. I had no self-confidence at all. I recollect my dad telling me to find out something from a neighbour. This involved me having to knock on the neighbour’s door and trying to get my question out.

I was dying inside. Unbelievable but true. You see part of the trouble, maybe the whole of it, was that, during my young life, no one had given me a clear message about how great I was or that I looked nice or that I was special. This is fundamental in order to overcome shyness and build self-confidence. I am not blaming my parents as they failed to do this due to a number of factors. They were in many ways victims of their individual backgrounds.

I understand this. We were a poor family with nine of us living in a small apartment. My dad was a man of few words who worked all day and used up the rest of the evening in the local getting intoxicated, often coming home and being verbally abusive to every person, but mostly my mum. She did the best that she could but with six children, born in quick succession, and a frail mother to care for, she was pretty much weighed down with the responsibilities of life.

Added to this she had very little aid from my father in the daily organization of the home. The upshot of this being that she had not a lot left of herself to give to anyone else. I am not saying this in order to gain sympathy from anyone but to show the significance of building up self-confidence from the very beginning of a child’s life. You can do this by admiring your youngster at every opportunity that you can.

Acknowledge their achievements and make a fuss of them. Tell them on a regular basis that they are looking good. Always make your child feel special and wanted. In this way, you will assist your youngster to build self-confidence and overcome any shyness they may experience. Remember helping your child in overcoming shyness and building confidence is one of the best gifts that you can give them.
